This year's REALTORS Care® Award goes to Jacquie McCarnan, a realtor who has shown an incredible commitment to her community. Through her efforts, she's connected people in need with the help they require, proving that one person can indeed make a significant impact.
A Guiding Principle
Jacquie's approach to community service is guided by a simple yet powerful philosophy: "Wake up every day with the intention of doing something for someone else with no expectation of return." This principle has been the driving force behind her many charitable activities.
From Concern to Action: North Van Cares
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jacquie worried about seniors in her community and her ability to support her parents. Instead of letting worry take over, she turned her concern into action. In March 2020, she started the Facebook group North Van Cares with her daughters. The main goal was to create a space where seniors could get help with everyday tasks like picking up groceries or prescriptions. At its peak, the group was helping over 250 people. This initiative was amazing because it brought people together to help and provided support for both the volunteers and those receiving assistance. It really addressed the isolation seniors faced during that time.
Key Takeaways:
- Community Mobilization: Jacquie successfully rallied community members to volunteer their time and resources.
- Targeted Support: The group provided specific help, like grocery and prescription delivery, to seniors.
- Addressing Isolation: The initiative directly combatted the loneliness experienced by seniors during the pandemic.
Responding to Tragedy
When a tragedy struck the region in 2021, North Van Cares became a trusted organizer for support. The group helped the victims and their families of the Lynn Valley stabbing. Jacquie's foundation not only collected and distributed over $140,000 but also acted as a buffer between the media and those dealing with trauma. She created a campaign called "Valley Strong," which helped the community rally around those affected by the incident.
Expanding the Vision
As North Van Cares grew, so did Jacquie's vision. She designed custom products that were sold locally and organized galas to bring the community together and raise funds for nonprofits she supports. One such organization is Backpack Buddies, which provides food for vulnerable children on weekends. Jacquie's work with Backpack Buddies supports over 360 schools across the province.
A Tireless Advocate
Jacquie McCarnan is recognized for motivating others to volunteer and for raising awareness about the needs of children and seniors. She works tirelessly to help youth, the elderly, and the environment. As a nominee for the Canadian REALTORS Care® Award 2024, she continues to plan new ways to build a more caring and supportive community nationwide.
Her belief is that community building is about bringing people together. She finds a great feeling in connecting individuals who might not otherwise meet, seeing it as an integral part of who we are.
